The follower of the Way is not worried about being viewed as lowly. He lives a simple life. By being lower, he is above, just like the great oceans. The oceans are below so that the rivers may flow into them. Thus, in order to be above, one must be below. The follower’s life often involves living in a simple house, not worrying about having possessions or friends or contact with others, doing simple work for very little money, and then coming home and meditating. It is a simple and noble life.
