What Makes A Masterpiece?

What makes a work a masterpiece and another work garage sale fodder? The brushstrokes and the composition, of course, but sometimes it comes down to confidence. A painter who believes his work is great is likely to convince others of his greatness although his ability might be no better than the average Sunday painter. Confidence can make the difference between success and failure. Without confidence, one is a tent with no stakes, ready to collapse in the first wind.
