The Dao is a natural thing. When we’re trying to be one
with the Dao, it’s got to be natural too. You can’t force it. The square peg
just doesn’t go into the round hole. It takes time to sand it down and get it
to fit. It don’t matter how many retreats you’ve gone to, or if you’ve been to
India or Tibet or Nepal, it doesn’t matter how many books you’ve bought. It’s
got to come natural. Nobody becomes one with the Dao overnight. The Dao isn’t
that cheap. You don’t find it on the street corner beckoning you, or leaning
into your car asking you questions, although you could find it on the street
corner somewhere if you look hard enough.
