The Dao is the essence
of discretion. Discretion is defined as the power or right to the power or
right to decide or act according to one's own judgment; freedom of judgment or
choice. Well, the Dao certainly has the power to decide, if it decides at all,
to act on its own wishes. It answers to no one. It has the ultimate freedom.
But even this freedom is kept in check by yin and yang. Maintaining balance is
the key that it seeks to maintain. Without balance, there would be chaos. Discretion
can also be defined as the quality of being discreet, especially with reference
to one's own actions or speech; prudence or decorum; the Dao is always
discreet, keeping its distance by being unseen, unheard, and untouchable, yet
remaining close at all times. The Dao keeps everything close to the vest,
keeping its secrets, yet having no secrets at the same time.
