Cattle Kate

Ellen Watson, also known as Cattle Kate was a cook and a seamstress who graduated some say to rustling cattle although there were others who disagreed with that assertion …she was considered by some to be an outlaw although she was never violent and was never charged with any crime in her life… nonetheless, she was apprehended by a group of riders hired by cattlemen who wanted her out of the way… the riders took matters into their own hands and lynched Kate along with her partner Jim Averell on July 20, 1889…six people were arrested in connection with the lynching…however witnesses to that event were murdered or disappeared mysteriously or were even bought off so they wouldn’t testify, and charges were never brought against the six... Cheyenne newspapers that were dominated by wealthy cattle interests, invented ridiculous stories to discredit her.

  1. Witnesses being bought off... not much has changed nowadays.
