Bill Masterton

Bill Masterton was a center iceman who played for the Minnesota North Stars after the great NHL expansion of 1967… he is the only player in the history of the National Hockey League  to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game…they came as the result of massive head injuries and brain trauma suffered after a hit during a January 1968, game versus the Oakland Seals…Masterton wasn’t wearing a helmet and few did during that time…he was hit by two players and fell backward with his head hitting the ice…he mumbled a few words and then went unconscious and never recovered…yet it was 11 years before the league mandated helmets for all new players…sometimes it takes something profoundly tragic before people take action.
